  1. Title of the Practice:

Imbibing in students leadership qualities and holistic development so that they can contribute to Nation Building

 

Objective of the Practice:

The Objective of the practice are :

 

  1. To train students through teaching and analytical skills and also encourage extensive reading so that they are prepared to enter the field of research;
  2. To ensure that the students are well versed in concepts relating to the course, so that they become excellent teachers;
  3. To motivate the students to become able administrators in government institutions through including grassroot level issues in the curriculum; this will enable students to understand the problems faced by the economy and thus make suitable policy decisions;
  4. To prepare students to enter the corporate world and also adapt to the changing needs of industry
  5. To allow students to realize their potential and creativity by nurturing in them a positive attitude, moral and ethical values, as well as the ability to excel in their career through extra curricular activities.

 The Context

Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is one of the oldest nationally and internationally renowned research and teaching institutions, founded in 1930. All round efforts are made to maintain the rich legacy of thorough and meticulous training in teaching and research to students, so that they are well equipped to face challenges in their career, while excelling in the same. The early years after the foundation of the Institute, saw limited students graduating, but each student has made a land mark career with significant contributions to the economic and social fabric of the country. Over the decades, as the Institute was awarded “Deemed University “ status, the scale of its functioning has been expanded through diversifying into various fields of Economics and increasing the strength of students.

 

The Practice

The teaching program of the Institute is designed such that there is overall development of the student and they are trained to put theory into practice. The curriculum ensures that learning is exciting for the student and not stereotype and rote. The basic concepts in the subject are made clear, quantitative and qualitative data are used to bring clarity to issues, case studies, field trips, guest lectures are organized to give a wider meaning to the syllabus. Thus, the teachers ensure that the student has captured the subject and not only the cognitive knowledge but also the social and communication skills are developed. There are discussions in the class and students are encouraged to develop an enquiring mind. The students are thus equipped to solve problems related to any context and situation, face challenges and have a broader perspective on any issue.

 

Evidence of success

 When the students graduate and return to collect their degree on the convocation day, they are bubbling with success and confidence. The degree is also awarded by eminent personalities, including noble laureates. Most students are well placed in diverse fields such government institutions, research institutions, teaching profession, corporate sector, etc. Several students enroll for higher education in leading national and international universities.

 

 

Problem encountered and Resources Required:

Nil. By virtue of the Institute not being relatively very large in size, any problem, if arises, can easily be sorted and resolved. Team work and cooperation also prevent problems to arise.

 

(II)  Title of the practice:

To encourage faculty to undertake research which will promote the rural sector.

 

Objective of the Practice

The objective of the Practice is :

 

  1. To undertake grass root level research so that the Institute can contribute to policy on the economic and social front;
  2. To encourage the faculty to conduct field work in the interiors and observe the problems faced by the rural sector, and those located in remote areas;
  3. To hold regular meetings with government on economic and social issues and present to them the findings of the research of the Institute;
  4. To facilitate the government in framing policies and thus contribute to nation building.

 

 

The Context

 

Since inception, the Institute has been involved in research that addresses the economic and social problems of the country. Infact, so rich is the legacy that major problems facing the country, were even researched, during colonial rule. The British administration in pre independence era also had faith in the Institute’s ability to conduct research. GIPE has well maintained this legacy and has always been involved in grass root level rural economy.

 

The Practice

Continuous research on rural economy is conducted every year. The Institute has centres such Agro -Economic Research Centre, Population Research Centre and Centre of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy which are constantly undertaking research on rural economy.

The Institute has well trained research investigators who are constantly on field, collecting grass root level primary data and also observing the extent to which the rural population has benefitted from government schemes and programmes.

Other infrastructure requirements such as softwares for tabulating the data by computer assistants is also in place. Overall the Institute is well equipped with all facilities from data collection to preparation of final research report. The report is peer reviewed and submitted to the sponsoring agency and further used for issues to be addressed by policy.

 

Evidence of Success

The government often takes the help of the Institute when the need for evaluation of its programmes are required or if there is need to conduct research before making a policy decision. Large number of projects in such direction have been conducted by the Institute on regular basis.

INSTITUTIONAL BEST PRACTICES (2018-19)

1. Title of the Practice:
Faculty Seminars

Objective of the Practice:
The Objective of the practice are

A. To provide a forum to the faculty to share with other faculty members and research staff an opportunity to share their experience in teaching-learning process, research, consultancy/extension project, studies leading to presentation/publication of papers, etc.
B. To provide a forum to the academic community of the Institute to understand, question and appreciate the nature of academic/research work undertaken by peers.
The principle underlying this practice is that each faculty gets the opportunity to present his research findings in a seminar. Such peer scrutiny emphasizes the need for faculty members to continuously update and share their knowledge. The feedback provided by the participants of the seminar, greatly help the researcher to strengthen his/her research and even expand the scope of the work. It also serves as a pointer to the holistic contribution of the individual teachers to teaching /learning and research at the Institute.

The Context
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is a nationally renowned research and teaching institution, credited with a robust teaching programme and social meaningful empirical research. The Institute has initiated and sustained the practice of organizing faculty seminars regularly, so that the entire research community at the Institute participates in a focused discussion on the various aspects of teaching-learning initiatives, research project, studies, etc. undertaken by follow teachers.

The Practice
The practice of faculty seminars is coordinated by two faculty members (who are nominated coordinators for this event) who prepare a schedule of faculty seminars during the academic year.

About two weeks prior to the seminar, the faculty who would deliver the seminar, submits to the coordinators the topic of the seminar, along with a one page abstract. The abstract is then circulated to the faculty/ research staff via e-mail.

At the seminar, the faculty member concerned makes a presentation on the chosen topic, for about 45 minutes. The Presentation is then followed by a QA session and focused discussion on relevant aspects such as the principles of economic theory, teaching/research methodology, outcomes of studies/projects future course of action etc.

A list of the faculty seminars held at the institute, along with their respective abstracts, is then uploaded on the website of the Institute.
The Faculty seminars are also open to students, visitor and special invites.

On some occasions experts are invited to present a special seminar on topics of concurrent academic/research interest.

Evidence of success
Faculty seminars are a regular feature of academic ethos at this institute. The evidence of the success of this practice lies in the seriousness and commitment with which faculty members prepare and present their seminars and the spirit of open debate and learning with which the exercise is undertake.

Tittle of the practice:
Six monthly presentations by Ph.D. students.

Objective of the Practice
The objective of the Practice are

(a). To assess the performance of the Ph.D. students.
(b) The Ph D presentation is attended by entire faculty and hence the student gets suitable feedback on his Ph.D. work.

The principal underlying this practice is that the student gets motivated to expedite his work and share his work which normally involved huge empirical data. The faculty also provides him with valuable inputs so as to strengthen his Ph D work and improve the quality.

The Context

Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is renowned for quality research with excellent library facilities and highly conducive environment to undertake research. This enables the Institute to attract several Ph D students from different parts of the country. The Ph D programme has the potential to promote quality research and students get an opportunity to strengthen their research abilities.
The Practice
The Ph.D. Seminars are conducted every six months. The student presents his work which is brain stormed followed by several useful suggestions and ideas given to him/her. Further, the student also indicates his time frame to complete his thesis. The practice creates an indirect pressure on the student to work intensively.

Evidence of Success
The quality of Ph.D. thesis is strengthen and completed in a time bound manner.
