Commemorating 100 Years of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Pioneering Paper on the Problem of the Rupee
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute, Pune (BARTI) and Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics are pleased to announce a special conference to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s seminal paper, “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution.” This was the Doctoral thesis of Dr. Ambedkar awarded by the London School of Economics. This landmark event will bring together scholars, economists, historians, and policymakers to reflect on the impact of Dr. Ambedkar’s work on contemporary economic thought and policy.

Conference Highlights
- Plenary Sessions: Discussions on the historical context and lasting influence of Dr. Ambedkar’s paper.
- Panel Discussions: Expert panels exploring themes such as monetary policy, economic justice, and financial inclusion.
- Paper Presentations: Selected papers from leading academics and researchers on topics related to the themes of the conference.
- A special session—panel discussion—would be conducted/chaired by Interim-VC Dr. Shankar Das and we expect noted economists to participate in the panel discussion.
- Commemorative Exhibitions: Exhibitions showcasing rare documents, photographs, and memorabilia related to Dr. Ambedkar and his work on the rupee.
Call for Papers
Day 1
We invite submissions of abstracts for paper presentations on topics including, but not limited to:
- Historical analysis of “The Problem of the Rupee”
- Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to economic thought
- Evolution of monetary policy in India
- Economic implications of currency reforms
- Financial inclusion and economic justice
Day 2
The development of scheduled castes has been one of the mandates (within the framework) of our constitution. The conference would focus on the critical assessment of their development on social and economic indicators. It also addresses the social and economic disparities that exist between the scheduled castes and the general category. The conference would also deal with the aspect of protection of discrimination of scheduled castes and its relation to economic development in contemporary society. The conference also would like to assess the causes of cultural lag as far as the development of scheduled castes is concerned.
The conference aims to address some of these issues and welcomes submissions on the following themes.
- Disparities within Scheduled Castes—intra-group and along gender,
- Educational Inequalities—especially higher and technical education,
- Inequalities in Employment: Public, Private and Corporate Sector,
- Inequalities in Enterprises and access to capital,
- Towards a future of a casteless society
The conference is not limited to the above themes but submissions are welcome with reference to Dr. Ambedkar’s ideas and thoughts that are relevant in contemporary context.
Submission Guidelines
- Abstracts should be no more than 300 words.
- Submissions must include the author’s name, affiliation, and contact information.
