Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must have completed one of the following:

  • A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree in Economics/Agricultural Economics/Population Studies after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree, OR
  • A 2-year/4-semester master’s degree in Economics/Agricultural Economics/Population Studies after a 3-year bachelor’s degree, OR
  • A qualification equivalent to the master’s degree recognized by a statutory regulatory body.
  • Candidates must have at least 55% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade. A 5% relaxation is provided for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories as per UGC norms.

Candidates must also meet one of the following additional requirements:

  • Qualified for UGC JRF with a valid offer at the time of application.
  • Eligible for Ph.D. admission based on a valid UGC NET score.

For Foreign Candidates

  • For Foreign Candidates Admission will be based on the personal interview.
  • Equivalent qualifications from foreign institutions accredited by recognized accreditation agencies.

For the academic year 2024-25, a total of 30 seats are available across three disciplines:

Economics :  16 Nos. – International Trade, Economics of Discrimination, Game Theory, Public Health Economics, Finance and Banking, Environmental Economics, Poverty and Labour Issues, Development Economics, Cooperatives, and allied subjects

Agricultural Economics : 12 Nos. -Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, Rural Non-Farm Employment, Environmental Economics, Climate Change Impact Assessment, Adaptation & Mitigation, Natural Resource Management, Sustainable Agriculture

Population Studies :  2 Nos. – Population Studies, Demography, Public Health.

Seat allocation follows Government of Maharashtra guidelines and applicable UGC/State directives.

Reservation Policy:

  • SC: 13% | ST: 7% | DTNT/VJNT: 11% | OBC (NCL): 19% | General: 50% (including 10% EWS for Maharashtra domicile candidates).
  • 4% supernumerary seats for Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
  • 1% supernumerary seat for Orphan Children as per government policy.
  • Reserved category candidates from other states will be considered under the General category.
  • No Management Quota is available.
  • Unfilled reserved seats may be transferred to the General category after review.

  • Candidates must register online on the institute’s portal, complete the application form, and pay the application fee.
  • The admission process differs for UGC-JRF holders and non-JRF candidates:
  • JRF holders: Admission is based solely on a personal interview.
  • Non-JRF candidates: Admission is based on the UGC-NET score (70%) and personal interview (30%).
  • Candidates with other fellowships (e.g., BARTI, SARTI, NFSC, NFST, NFOBC) will be considered as non-JRF candidates.
  • Foreign candidates: Admission is based on a personal interview.

  • Yes, a part-time Ph.D. programme is available for working professionals from academia, industry, or research organizations.
  • Candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the time of admission.
  • Attendance for pre-Ph.D. coursework is mandatory, and candidates must be available for offline classes during coursework.

  • Candidates will present/discuss their research proposal or area of interest.
  • Shortlisted candidates will receive interview details via official communication.
  • Interviews will be held in the second week of March.
  • Selected candidates must join the coursework in the first week of April 2025.

  • The coursework will be one full semester and will carry 16 credits.
