MSc Economics (Public Policy)

M.Sc. in Public Policy ( MPP) program, a new program from the academic year 2023-24, is a two-year full-time post-graduate programme. This programme offers theoretical and practical knowledge in Public Policy. It offers an opportunity in understanding problems in public policy framing, and conducting robust, applied and impactful study that influences public policy. This programme will give the students a keen understanding of theoretical issues in public policy, and its relationship with empirical research evidences that significantly influences the public policy process, such as ideologies and institutions. Students in this programme will be able to design research problems, and undertake a range of policy-relevant studies, and conduct research to the highest standards. This programme offers versatile skills that will be very useful to policymakers, researchers, and academicians. In this programme the studnets are exposed to Soft skill development: presentation and communication (oral and written) , impact of public policy on primary, seconday and tertiary sectors in select advanced and emerging market and project management. In the end the students are required to present assignments on the case study writing on impact analysis of public policy, evidence-based policy evaluation, project assignment , field work, dissertation. It is thus a distinct programme from other M.Sc. programmes.

Juthika Patankar


Juthika Patankar joined the IAS in 1988 and was allotted the UP cadre. She is M.A (English) from Delhi University and has a Diploma in Public Administration from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration, France. She has served in the Department of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Skill Development in the Central Government. She retired as Secretary to GoI in the Central Information Commission.

Sunil Kumar is an MA in Sociology from Delhi University. He joined the IAS in 1987. He belonged to the UP cadre and has the experience of serving in various Departments in the State including Finance, Planning, Social Welfare, Education ,Information, Personnel, Medical Education, Stamps & Registration and Sales Tax. He has served in the Ministry of Rural Development, Inland Waterways, Ministry of Commerce in the Central Government and retired as Secretary to GoI , Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

Sitaram Janardan Kunte

Sitaram Janardan Kunte


Sitaram Janardan Kunte is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Services officer. He is a former chief secretary to the Government of Maharashtra. He has served at various government positions in Maharashtra and the central government. Mr Kunte holds his Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics. He is proficient in behavioral economics for public policy and budgeting.

Mr Umesh Sarangi

Mr Umesh Sarangi


Mr Umesh Sarangi holds a Masters degree in Science (Botany) from Utkal University (gold medallist). Mr. Sarangi has 35 years of experience in Indian Administrative Service and brought in significant reforms in modernizing agriculture, focusing on agro processing and export. As the erstwhile Chairman of National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) from December 2007 to December 2010, Mr. Sarangi focused on rural infrastructure, accelerated initiatives such as microfinance, financial inclusion, watershed development and tribal development. Mr. Sarangi has specialized knowledge and experience in agriculture and rural economy.

Mr Ashok Bal


Mr Ashok Bal is from Delhi School of Economics and MBA from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. He had a long career in IRS and occupied important positions in Income Tax Department and outside in Government of India. He has worked as Deputy Chairman of Mumbai Port Trust. He took voluntary retirement from the IRS to join the private sector. He was CEO of an Aditya Birla group and.on the board of several other companies too. He regularly writes. He is author of the book Gajapati which has been widely acclaimed across reader communities.

Dr Charan Singh

Dr Charan Singh


Dr. Charan Singh is the CEO and Founder Director, EGROW Foundation. He is also the Non-Executive Chairman of Punjab & Sind Bank. He continues to pursue his academic interests by regularly teaching courses on Macro, Monetary Policy, Global Economics (International Finance) and contemporary issues on Indian Economy at IIM Visakhapatnam and IIM Rohtak.

Earlier, he was the RBI Chair Professor of Economics at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, India; Senior Economist at the IMF, Washington DC (August 2009-December 2012); and Research Director (Economic Policy, Debt Management; 1997-2009) at the RBI where he joined as Research Officer in the economics department in 1984. He started his career in 1983 as management trainee in Punjab National Bank. Among other positions, Dr Singh served on the Board of NHB and NABFINS.
